Consistent terminology
It is the position of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors that the proper terminology for all official business and correspondence of the Association will include "Fraternity/Sorority" and not "Greek." The rationale are as follows:
- Using the term "Greek" ignores the fact that not all fraternities and sororities are Greek-letter organizations;
- The word "Greek" is a slang term and is not meant to delineate those from the country of Greece;
- We should be consistent in our message, and as our own association’s name states, we are the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors.
We strongly encourage our members and members of the higher education community to make a concerted effort to adopt this same philosophy and avoid using the term "Greek" when referencing those involved in the fraternity/sorority movement.
