AFA Foundation President's Challenge: Superheroes of the Profession

Since its incorporation in 1992, the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors Foundation has had the following as its purpose:

  • To enhance the mission, understanding and techniques of advising college fraternity groups.
  • To support educational and instructional portions of inter-Greek and Greek-related organizations.
  • To provide funding in support of scholarships and fellowships.
  • To do anything incidental to or in furtherance of the foregoing.

The AFA Foundation President’s Challenge: Superheroes of the Profession is an extension of this mission. We want to do all we can to recognize professionals in our community who are making a difference in the lives of the next generation.

And to show his support for this mission, AFA Foundation President, Tom Jelke, will match every gift raised in support of our superheroes.

The Superheroes of the Profession campaign has concluded. We are pleased to report that the campaign raised over $22,000, including the very generous matching gift from Tom Jelke.

Thank you to everyone who support the AFA Foundation through this campaign!

Silent Auction

Since 1994 the Silent Auction has been the AFA Foundation's most popular event, raising over $290,000 to support those involved in the advisement of men's and women's fraternities. Your donations help the Foundation to fund projects aimed at strengthening our profession, including research and professional development programs - please help make this our best year yet!

All individuals and organizations who donate items to the Silent Auction will be recognized by the AFA Foundation. Donations for non-service items with proof of valuation are tax-deductible. Please join us as we celebrate the Silent Auction's 19th year by making a donation.

The final deadline for submitting a donation online is Saturday, November 24, 2012. NOTE: Donations will be accepted at the Annual Meeting.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SILENT AUCTION

What items should I donate?

Often time the Foundation is asked by donors what would be the best items to donate to be bid on. In conducting a review of past Silent Auction items, auction items that were experience-based have been some of our highest fundraising items. These items can be time at a vacation home; sporting event tickets; airline ticket vouchers; hotel/resort trips; or other individual and/or group experience packages. In a close second to generating a higher yield on funds raised were small electronics and educational resources/manuals. We are encouraging more donations in these areas for 2012. As always other donations such as speaking engagements; University memorabilia; autographed items; organizational consultations; sporting memorabilia; artwork; jewelry; books; etc. are accepted and encouraged as well. All gift cards NOT included as part of a special package will be used for our Gift Card Raffles throughout the Silent Auction.

How do the speaking engagements offered in the silent auction work?

This year, we have changed some of the pricing for speaking engagements. All professional speakers will now have a starting bid of $2,000, which includes a $500 travel stipend. All special speakers (those not represented by an Agency or Vendor) will now have a starting bid at $1,600, which also includes a $500 travel stipend. Institutions/organizations will be responsible for any travel arrangements above and beyond $500.This new pricing shows our commitment for these nationally-known speakers and their beneficial programs, but still provides your campus/organization the opportunity to book them at a discounted price. If you have the winning bid, you/your institution doesn't have to pay for the speaker until they come to campus! Most speakers require a mutually agreeable date in the 2013 calendar year.

What if I want to donate with a group of friends in a package donation?

The Foundation encourages groups of colleagues or friends to bundle items together in Packages.  Some past examples have included Dog Lovers, Friends of the SEC, etc. Beginning in 2012, the Foundation is no longer able to coordinate the grouping of these package donations due to complications with this process in past years. If you or a group of friends/colleagues would like to donate together as a package, it is the responsibility of the individual coordinating the group donation to gather all items for the donation, inventory the items, and to drop them off as a package to the Silent Auction.

The Amicus Sequentes Circle

The Amicus Sequentes Circle honors those who leave a legacy for the future of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors through specific gifts or bequests to the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors Foundation.

In 2006, the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors celebrated thirty years of service to higher education and the fraternal movement. The reason AFA was established remains vital today - that is to enhance its members’ ability to create fraternity and sorority experiences that positively affect students, host institutions, and communities.

During this historic 30th anniversary year, the Foundation is announcing the establishment of a planned giving program and will be campaigning for charter members of its new planned giving recognition society. This dedicated group will be known as the Amicus Sequentes Circle, or “friends to those that follow” in the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors.

If you have included the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors Foundation in your will or estate plan and have not notified the Foundation, please do so, and you will be recognized as a member of the Amicus Sequentes Circle. Members of The Circle will be listed in future annual reports or, if you wish, you may request anonymity. This is an opportunity to make a statement about our personal values… the satisfaction of perpetuating an important cause for future generations… the increased financial ability we now have to arrange generous planned gifts during and beyond our lifetime. These are all reasons why we make charitable gifts in our estate plans. The Foundation’s Board members and staff welcome your   inquiries and will assist you in becoming a Charter Member of the new Amicus Sequentes Circle!
