Along with LaunchPoint, we are excited to introduce your 2016 #AFAAM Ignite Fraternity lineup! We hope you join us at the Laugh Boston Comedy Club, Thursday, December 1 from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. for a great series of talks.

Nonsense and Namaste: Learn to relax in 10 minutes! Together we will find the "Namaste" in life's nonsense.

In this seven minute Ignite Talk, Gabrielle will talk about how we can take a moment to pause, breathe, and practice mindfulness in the moment with actual breathing and yoga skills learned from trained therapists and yoga teachers. She'll highlight how work-life balance isn't needed to practice mindfulness and meditation and how we can do this right at our desks for 10 minutes.  This Ignite Talk will be interactive, dynamic, and with a touch of humor.

Redefining Superman: What makes a man super? What if what we know about men is all wrong?

Man up. Be a man. Grow a pair. What does it all mean? It’s time to have an open and honest conversation about what it means to be a man these days. It’s time for us to look at one another as resources rather than competition. Let’s move beyond the preconceived notions of what it means to be a man and truly talk about what it takes to become a man. Let’s be authentic. Let’s get real. This program is an attempt to start constructive and meaningful dialogue to address the relationships men face with society, women, family, other men and, most-importantly, themselves.

Peer Educators in National Panhellenic Conference Sororities - A Case Study: How do we support peer educators in NPC sororities? We listen to their needs.

Peer educators play a vital role in helping NPC sororities fulfill their missions to create better women and future leaders. They provide invaluable services for their peers, which enhance the college experience, yet little is known about their experiences as peer educators. This talk will highlight findings from a case study investigating sorority peer educators’ training, support, and skills and competencies development. Through in-depth interviews with seven women, the study found that peer educators perceive their role as a resource for their sisters, they experience various levels of training and preparation for their roles, and peer support networks are important to their success. This study only scratched the surface of how peer education is perceived and experienced by sorority women but it opened an interesting discussion on how student affairs professionals and inter/national organizations are supporting the leadership and peer educator competencies development of their student leaders. Understanding the needs of these leaders will allow for the creation of services and support that can enhance not only the experience of NPC sorority peer educators, but the experience of every woman in their chapters.

Are you moving the needle?: We all have a role in moving the needle. Which way are you moving it?

It's been a rough few years for fraternity and sorority life, nationally and for many local campuses or individual organizations. As professionals, I hope to spark some reflection on how each of us are moving the needle towards the positive in our day to day work.  There is no magic wand to solve all issues, but each person plays a role in which way the needle moves on their campus or in their organization.  I hope to challenge attendees to think about what they are doing to really address issues in their community, and to be able to identify if they are just busy for the sake of being busy. We must address the issues head on, advocate for the student experience as well as our profession, and at times prove we are more than just babysitters. I hope to inspire attendees to think about how they divide their time, how they are developed professionally, and perhaps consider what are things they have been doing that don't truly need as much attention as they have been giving.

Men’s Fraternities Should Be for Women: A Call to Rethink Gender in Our Organizations: Single-sex fraternities will soon be outdated. Fraternities don't have to be. The choice is ours.

Fraternities are part of an endless cycle of perpetuating narrow, aging ideas of masculinity and heteronormativity, and then offering the necessary spaces for men to cope with these expectations. They are both the problem and the solution. In an attempt to finally break free from this repeating chain of events, perhaps it is time for us to rethink altogether the necessity of fraternity being exclusive to men and consider the possibility of fraternity realized across the gender spectrum. Regardless of where you sit in the single-sex debate, it’s important to name that this is a debate. Where the purpose is to vehemently hold onto your truth and to do your best to disprove that of the other. Where only two perspectives can exist and only one of them can eventually be crowned as “right.” If anything, I hope this presentation can help move us away from this sort of debate and more toward a dialogue, in which we are open and willing to hear new ideas.

YOLO - right?: You only live once, right? Well, from someone who’s on life number three – relationships matter!

In the fall of 2015, my life took a dramatic turn – for several weeks I was in intensive care while my family and friends did not know whether they would see me again. After a three month hospitalization and another five month leave, I have now been able to return to work and life. As a result, I have a completely different lens through which I see the world and approach each day with a renewed purpose. Facing a sudden, life-threatening illness has the power to change the way a person looks at life. For me, it reminded me that there is nothing more valuable than taking care of the relationships you have. This session will reflect on these lessons, explore the value of relational leadership, and encourage participants to intentionally engage in discussions with others to build stronger relationships.

PNM Code Of Conduct: A Potential New Member Code of Conduct that changed how chapters ensured values were taken serious. A system to change the status quo.

The University of Arizona's Panhellenic updated their code of conduct for PNMs after seeing PNM's be mean, disrespectful, and rude to the chapters that they didn't consider top tier. There were chapters who were so distraught, their members were in tears after rounds. We created a system to hold the PNMs to the code of conduct allowing chapters to share information if they felt women were seeking to join for the wrong reason. It changed the chapters feelings about the process and offered them a voice. How that effected chapter and advisor moral was amazing.
