Editorial Board Volunteers

Below are the current Editorial Board volunteer opportunities available to the Association membership.

All volunteers are required to be current members of the Association during the terms of appointment. If you have not renewed your membership, please do so before apply for a position. Initial training and committee meetings will be conducted at the 2016 Annual Meeting in the Volunteer Kickoff, Wednesday November 30, from 5:00 p.m. - 5:45 p.m. If you are unable to attend the Volunteer Kickoff, chairpersons and the central office will provide information on an as needed basis.

 

Essentials Editorial Board & Assistant Editor

The Essentials Editorial Board and Assistant Editor play an important role in the Association’s ongoing efforts to provide excellent resources and services for members. Essentials is a monthly themed educational e-publication provided to AFA members to educate readers about a variety of topics, setting the stage for critical thought and discussion about cutting edge developments in the field. Essentials Editorial Board members are expected to produce a quality publication grounded in the Core Competencies for Excellence in the Profession.

 

The Essentials Editor and Assistant Editor supervise the Essentials Editorial Board. The committee members will divide their assigned responsibilities to distribute creative and editorial functions.

 

Responsibilities

  • Produce 10 monthly issues per year, with approximately 5 educational articles on relevant topics in each issue.
  • Determine themes for monthly issues as appropriate.
  • Stay abreast of current issues and events in the fraternity/sorority inter/national community
  • Contact and solicit articles from potential authors.
  • Review and edit articles to be published.
  • Co-lead the production of 2-3 issues per year and edit 6-8 additional articles throughout the year.
  • Use APA style appropriately.
  • Be timely in the publication of Essentials according to publication schedule.
  • Consider Core Competencies in designing issues and soliciting articles.
  • Participate in initiatives directed by the Central Office staff or Board of Directors

Qualifications

  • Prior experience writing and editing scholarly articles.
  • Strong background in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and APA Style.
  • Utilize the resources of their institutions/organizations as well as their own professional development networks to create or solicit themes for issues and articles for publication.

Commitment Required

  • The Editor will delegate each edition to 1 or 2 Editorial Board members.
  • During the months they are leading an edition, an Editorial Board member can expect to spend approximately 10 hours per month selecting article themes, soliciting authors, editing articles, and providing feedback to authors.
  • On months in which one is not creating an edition, one can expect to provide feedback to other Editorial Board members, edit articles, and brainstorm ideas, for an average of 1-2 hours per month.

 

Oracle: The Research Journal of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors Peer Review Board

The Core Competencies for Excellence in the Profession highlight the need for sound and credible research on fraternity/sorority life and professional practice. Oracle: The Research Journal of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors seeks to fulfill this need through the annual publication of two journal issues containing high quality research. The Editor will lead the Associate Editor(s) and Peer Review Board members as they recruit, review, and publish research to advance the fraternal movement and profession of fraternity and sorority advising.

 

The Peer Review Board member reports to the Editor. The Editor and Associate Editor(s) will designate the Peer Review Board member’s responsibilities and functions. The Peer Review Board member may also be asked to submit monthly updates on the status of his/her goals on dates determined in consultation with the Editor.

 

Responsibilities

  • Review and edit articles for Oracle.
  • Assist the Editor and Associate Editor(s) in promoting the journal and developing and recruiting research article submissions.
  • Mentor and develop research appropriate for submission to Oracle.
  • Act as a steering committee to guide the future direction of the journal.
  • Participate in monthly conference calls.
  • Participate in initiatives directed by the Central Office staff or Board of Directors.

Qualifications

  • Well versed in the role of research in advising fraternities and sororities.
  • Established record of contributions to research.
  • Prior editing and publication experience and a strong background in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and APA Style.

Commitment Required

  • Review at least 2 to 4 articles annually with a swift turnaround (no more than 21 days).
  • Maintain contact with the Editor and follow up with tasks as assigned.
  • Contribute meaningful dialogue to Editorial Board discussions on regular Editorial Board conference calls.
  • Prior to the submission deadline, the time commitment equals approximately 1 hour per week.
  • During the editing process, the time commitment may be up to 5 hours per week.

 

Perspectives Editorial Board

The Perspectives Editorial Board plays an important role for the Association with ongoing efforts to provide excellent resources and services to members. Perspectives Editorial Board members are expected to produce a quality publication grounded in the Core Competencies for Excellence in the Profession and to do so in accordance with established guidelines in the AFA Style Guide and general expectations.

The Perspectives Editor shall supervise the Editorial Board. The Editor will help the Editorial Board members divide their assigned responsibilities to distribute creative and editorial functions among Editorial Board members. The Editor coordinates and curates content for each issue of Perspectives, which entails proactively pursing authors and providing timely feedback to those who submit pieces.

Responsibilities

  • Meet all deadlines promptly.
  • Participate in editorial board training and conference calls.
  • Actively seek and solicit themes, articles and content material on a timely basis for each issue of Perspectives, working with the Editor and designated Central Office staff member(s).
  • Encourage ongoing discussion on Perspectives through the Association’s communications outlets.
  • Generate ideas, write materials, review submissions, and edit articles and items for Perspectives.

Qualifications

  • Prior editing and publication experience.
  • Strong background in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and APA Style.
  • Maintain AFA membership throughout their term of service.

Commitment Required

  • Appointments are for a 2 year term with approximately half of the Editorial Board transitioning each year.
  • Maintain contact with the Editor and follow up with tasks as assigned.
  • Contribute meaningful dialogue to Editorial Board discussions on regular Editorial Board conference calls.
  • Prior to the submission deadline, the time commitment equals approximately 1 hour per week.
  • During the editing process, the time commitment may be up to 5 hours per week.
