Introduction of Work Groups

I hope your summer is going well so far. I am writing today to communicate the next steps regarding the questions that were posed at the 2017 Business Meeting regarding the eligibility of which members can serve as the president of the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors as well as the format of the board of directors. We hope those who participated in office hour discussions, or have given direct feedback to board members, have found us to be thoughtful listeners. While we have not received any additional proposals to date, we know the conversation is still important to the membership and the association.


I am appointing a work group that will be charged to study and provide information regarding association best practices in these areas, to examine the processes of peer organizations, and to hear from members who would like to share their thoughts. If you have interest in serving on this work group or providing feedback to the work group, please complete this form by Friday, July 20. I cannot guarantee everyone interested will be able to serve, but everyone who completes the form will be heard.


After this work group provides their report to the board of directors, it will be shared with the membership. The charge of this work group will be to gather relevant information rather than to make a formal recommendation or take a position. As a membership association, the ultimate decision-making authority lies with the members themselves. Our job as a board is to make sure you feel informed with accurate information and to provide the best forum for voting to take place.


The board recognizes the importance of debate in the consideration of significant changes to our bylaws, as well as the concerns about in-person voting. Based on this feedback, your board is committed to creating forums for open discussion and debate when amendments to our bylaws are proposed and providing members with the opportunity to vote electronically whenever possible.


I am happy to take any feedback regarding these next steps during our July office hours, which will be held on July 23 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. EDT. To join me by Zoom, please follow this link during that time. If you are unavailable at that time, I welcome communication outside of those hours via email.
