2015 Individual Award Winners

The Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors Awards and Recognition Committee is pleased to announce the 2015 individual award recipients. Every year the AFA Awards and Recognition Committee recognizes outstanding contributions by our members/colleagues. These awards will be presented at the AFA Annual Meeting in Fort Worth, TX on Saturday, December 5. Please join us in congratulating our individual award winners.

Jack L. Anson Award


Tom Jelke, Ph.D. | T. Jelke Solutions | Sigma Phi Epsilon

For over 25 years, Tom Jelke has contributed in numerous ways to the field of fraternity and sorority advising. This includes his professional work as the President/CEO of T. Jelke Solutions consulting firm, as a campus practitioner, consultant, researcher, and as an active volunteer holding significant volunteer positions for Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, the AFA Foundation, and the Center for the Study of the College Fraternity (CSCF). Through Tom’s ongoing consulting work, he has engaged with hundreds of interfraternal and higher education partners. Tom holds a B.A. from Florida International University, a M.A. in College Student Personnel from Bowling Green State University, and a Ph.D. in Higher Education with a minor in Law from Indiana University.

Virginia “Ginger” Ambler, Ph.D. | William & Mary | Kappa Kappa Gamma

Virginia Ambler currently serves as the Vice President for Student Affairs and Assistant Professor of Education at William & Mary. Throughout her tenure in this role, she has been an active stakeholder in the fraternity/sorority experience on her campus. Throughout her career in student affairs, spanning over 25 years, Ginger has committed to professional and volunteer involvement, including roles in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), committee involvement ranging from diversity and social justice work to housing and facilities, and community volunteer work at her church and local elementary school. Ginger is also a member of Order of Omega and Phi Beta Kappa. Ginger received her B.A. at William & Mary, a M.A. in Higher Education and Student Affairs from The Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership from William & Mary. Her dissertation was awarded the NASPA Melvene D. Hardee Dissertation of the Year Award.

Robert H. Shaffer Award


Charles "Charley" Pride, Ph.D. | Western Kentucky University | Phi Delta Theta

Charles Pride is the Director of Student Activities and University Center at Western Kentucky University. His experience in student affairs began with his recipe of a B.A., M.A. and Ed.S. from Western Kentucky University. He later earned his Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Louisville. Charley’s fraternity and sorority history of engagement and advocacy is expansive, and includes volunteer roles, including General Council President for Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Charley has also served as Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI) faculty, a five-time Southeastern Panhellenic Conference Region Advisor, and a three-time Southeastern Interfraternity Conference Area Advisor. For his contributions to the field over his career, Charley has been awarded Sigma Nu’s Greek Advisor of the Year Award, a Kappa Alpha Order Appreciation Award, the Jane H. Sutton Advisor of the Year Award, and an Order of Omega Fellowship.

Sue Kraft Fussell Distinguished Service Awards

Tim Wilkinson | Wake Forest University | Sigma Phi Epsilon

Tim Wilkinson serves as the Associate Dean of Student Engagement at Wake Forest University. His current role was preceded by many years working in the fraternity and sorority community at Lehigh University. During this time, Lehigh was awarded the Change Initiative Award and the Diversity Initiative Award by the association. Tim’s AFA involvement includes his role as a Regional Director. Tim has also given his volunteer service to the Northeast Greek Leadership Association (NGLA) in which he has been actively involved on the Board of Directors, including serving as Executive Director. Tim received his B.A. from West Chester University and his M.A. in Human Services Administration from Rider University. He is currently a MA.A. candidate in Counseling and Human Services from Lehigh University.


Wendi Kinney | State University of New York Geneseo | Sigma Kappa

Wendi Kinney is currently the Assistant Dean of Students for Fraternal Life and Off-Campus Services at State University of New York Geneseo. She received her B.S. from SUNY Fredonia and her M.Ed. in Higher Educational Administration from University at Buffalo. Wendi works closely with the NGLA, and is currently representing the organization as the Executive Director. She volunteers with Sigma Kappa Sorority and Foundation, and also devotes her time to AFA having served on several workgroups, committees, and as a regional director.


Will Foran | North-American Interfraternity Conference | Phi Mu Delta

Will Foran serves as the Vice President for University Relations for the North-American Interfraternity Conference. Will has worked at several institutions as a campus-based professional. Through his time in the profession, he has served as a volunteer with AFA, with his fraternity, Phi Mu Delta, and for CSCF. He has also served on the Phi Mu Delta Foundation Board of Directors and as the AFA Essentials Editor. In 2007, Will was honored with the AFA Outstanding Volunteer Award. Will received a B.A. in Political Science and his M.A. in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.


Jennifer Levering | Miami University | Delta Gamma

Jenny Levering serves as Director of the Cliff Alexander Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life and Student Activities at Miami University in Oxford, OH. She has been a valuable AFA volunteer over the last decade serving in many capacities on committees, planning for the Annual Meeting, and coordinating workgroups. She has also served as an AFA Regional Director. Jenny received her B.A. in Communication Studies from Loyola Marymount University and her M.A. in Higher Education Administration from Ball State University. Jenny is an active member of Delta Gamma Fraternity and has served as a Collegiate Development Consultant in addition to several local and national volunteer roles. Jenny is the recipient of the Beta Theta Pi Interfraternalism Award as well as the Association of Fraternal Leadership & Values "The Gathering" grant. 


Jeremiah Shinn, Ph.D. | Boise State University | Lambda Chi Alpha

Jeremiah Shinn earned his B.S. from Arkansas Tech University, his M.A. in Higher Education Administration from the University of Michigan, and his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Eastern Michigan University. He currently serves as the Assistant Vice President for Student Life at Boise State University. Jeremiah has served as an active volunteer to AFA, which includes his service as President. In addition, Jeremiah has served as a regional NASPA volunteer, as a board member for CSCF, on the Higher Educational Advisory Board to the National Panhellenic Conference, and a volunteer for Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. For his service, Jeremiah has been recognized as a Gold Medallion Award Recipient from Eastern Michigan University, and has been awarded the Faculty/Staff Advisor of the Year Award by the Eastern Michigan University Interfraternity Council, the Delta Upsilon Interfraternalism Award, and the Meritorious Leadership Award presented by Boise State University.


Each year the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors Foundation invites friends to honor award recipients with a gift to the Foundation which will be used advance the work of AFA through scholarships, grants and funding for educational initiatives.
