Annual Meeting Educational Programs

The Educational Programs Committee is excited to open the Call for Programs for the 2018 Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting is a fantastic opportunity to learn from each other about how to advance our profession.
In order to make that experience meaningful, it takes members who are willing to share their expertise. We are looking for programs which seek to enhance learning, dialogue, and provide practical knowledge, as well as programs that fit with the core competencies of the Association. All program submissions are due Friday, June 22 at 11:59 PM PDT.
Before you submit your educational program, please review the below information.

An AFA Annual Meeting Educational Program should:
  • Support progressive/innovative thinking, be designed for applied learning, and be presented in new and unique ways.
  • Reflect the diverse experience and knowledge base of our membership.
  • Enhance member competency using the Association’s Core Competencies.
  • Focus on or offer any of the following:
    • Current events
    • Experience-based learning
    • Skills and/or knowledge development
    • New ideas
    • Diverse perspectives
    • Interactive & conversational
    • Personal development as a means to increase professional development

An Educational Program Presenter should:

  • Have subject matter experience and expertise from inside and/or outside of fraternity/sorority life and higher education.
  • Structure programs in a way that a variety of learning styles can be supported.

What to avoid:

  • Cookie-cutter presentations from past Annual Meetings.
  • Programs that members would perceive as:
    • Sales-pitches
    • Canned speeches/programs
    • Organizational/Company info sharing
  • Content that lacks support of research, assessment, etc.
  • Presentation teams of more than three presenters.
  • Programs that are not fully developed at the time of submission.

Tips & Tricks:

  • Read the Call for Programs in its entirety before submitting.
  • Stay within character/word limits for the program title and program abstract.
  • Be thoughtful in the title of your program.
    • The title is the first impression and may make the difference between a reviewer accepting or rejecting your submission.
    • Ask yourself: is this original, informative, provocative, engaging, and thought provoking?
  • Program abstracts should:
    • Be written in future tense and the second person.
    • Not use bullet points.
    • Preview the content and program outcomes/intentions.
    • Employ an educational tone.
    • Address your target audience and any interaction that will occur.
    • Clarify and explain the relevancy of the topic.
    • Refrain from including the learning outcomes in the abstract.
